Movies are big business today with more money being put into the film industry every
year. There are a number of qualities that a film needs to be truly successful,
and a tick needs to be made in all boxes before a movie will be considered truly
great. As well as a great script and a fantastic acting cast, movies need to
have a great and memorable look to them as well. It is the job of the director
as well as the stylists and film costume designers to make sure that the actors
have an authentic and memorable look. Some movies are remembered primarily for
their look, or have such a strong look that it acts as an anchor for the rest of
the content. Often an iconic device is used to create a memorable movie look,
like the suit in a batman movie or the sunglasses worn by a mysterious hero. In
fact sunglasses are one accessory that is used often in movies to give off an
atmosphere of coolness and mystery to the characters. Sunglasses date all the
way back to the 14th century in China where they were worn by judges to hide eye
expressions. Today they are absolutely everywhere and this is reflected and
amplified in popular cultural forms such as movies. By 1929 sunglasses had
become a popular fashion item, and already designer sunglasses were being made.
This process of a pair of shades becoming a fashion accessory was sped up when
famous movie stars and musicians started wearing sunglasses in their films and
in publicity shots as well. Throughout this history of sunglasses as a cultural
fashion accessory, there have been a number of people who have worn their
sunglasses so well that an iconic image has been created. While sunglasses are
used practically by drivers and sports people all over the world, one of their
primary uses is as a fashion item. Some famous names that are synonymous with
wearing shades are: James Dean, Jackie Onassis and Bono from the band U2. Often
it is not real world stars who have created the most memorable sunglasses images
however, but fictional characters from movies. Who will ever forget the image of
Arnold Schwarzanegger in a pair of dark shades in the Terminator movie, or the
Blues Brothers strutting their stuff in their suits and shades. Some modern
examples of films that have used sunglasses effectively include Pulp Fiction,
The Matrix Trilogy movies and pretty much any movie that had a spy or secret
agent character. Secret agents have often been portrayed wearing dark glasses
and dark suits in movies like Men In Black and The Matrix. Sunglasses are
regularly used in movies to make a character appear more cool, more aloof and
distant, more authoritarian or more mysterious. The use is slightly different
each time, however it can normally be explained by one or a few of these
concepts. A distinction has to be made between the regular use of sunglasses in
a movie, and the constant use of them by a character as a way of branding the
character or making them into an icon. Because sunglasses are common place in
many places over the world, movies have to include them so that they are
providing an authentic representation of reality. The use of shades in some
movies however is much more upfront and in your face than this. In a movie like
The Matrix or Terminator where some of the main characters are not humans, the
use of sunglasses can create an effect of distance between the subjective
observer and the character on screen. In other films such as Pulp Fiction and
The Blues Brothers, a sense of distance is still portrayed with the use of
glasses, but it is due to a coolness of attitude and a sense of mystery
surrounding the characters and is not because they are not human. From Easy
Rider in the 1960s to the gangster movies of the 70s and 80s and the science
fiction and secret agent films of today, sunglasses have often been used in
movies to great effect. They have become such a powerful cultural icon that a
humble pair of shades manages to both reflect and project the culture that
surrounds them.
